Not even astronauts can escape the long arm of Customs!

Many remember the first landing on the Moon, when Apollo 11 touched down on its surface on 20 July 1969 and Neil Armstrong, one of its astronauts and the first man to walk on the Moon, uttered his now famous phrase: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. People were either glued to the television or hunched around the radio as the world witnessed this historic event. But little did the astronauts know that when they returned to earth, a duty-conscious Customs offi cer would stop them and ask the most famous words associated with Customs services across the globe: “Do you have anything to declare?” Not even astronauts can escape the long arm of Customs!

EU Customs Reform: What will change in the import process?

In a previous article, the author described why and how the Commission intends to impose the obligations for importing goods on a single person, the importer in three variants: the regular importer, the deemed importer (for e-commerce) and the indirect customs representative representing both types of importers. In this article, the author focuses on the proposed import procedure, which consists of several consecutive steps.

Customs data requirements in the EU – latest changes

The Union Customs Code and related regulations set out, among other things, the requirements for the data to be submitted to customs. Normally, these regulations are not often amended. However, this has not been the case recently, see ‘EU law news February 2024’. In this article, we provide an overview of some of the latest changes to the data elements and invite readers who are new to the subject to familiarise themselves with the data tables and the new definitions such as sub-elements, sub-classes and attributes.

Five years ago, clearing shipments imported through Saudi ports of entry was a lengthy process that could take importers up to 12 days, and 8 days on average. To facilitate reporting and the exchange of data between all parties involved in the clearance of goods, whether private or governmental, 2017 saw the introduction of a national electronic system for the management of cross-border trade operations, called FASAH.

In this context, it is crucial to clarify some issues that regulate the procedure for providing paper documents and the form of customs control during electronic customs clearance of goods in Ukraine. In this article, we present a real case that happened to us at the end of March 2023 in Odesa.
