In this recording of the 'EU customs law update' webinar held on the 6 May 2025, Anthony Buckley delivers an analysis of the evolving global tariff landscape and its implications for international trade.
He focuses on the origins and escalation of recent tariff wars, particularly the unpredictable US trade policies that have redefined relationships with key partners such as China, and examines whether these developments are historical anomalies or symptoms of long-standing trends in globalisation.
The presentation highlights how shifting supply chains, driven by decades of offshoring and accelerated by technological advances, the COVID-19 pandemic, and geopolitical tensions, have transformed manufacturing and trade flows worldwide.
Anthony also addresses the rise of economic nationalism, the surge in new trade restrictions (with nearly 3,000 imposed in 2023 alone), and how both the US and EU are adopting increasingly protectionist strategies, likely to reshape global commerce over the coming years.
Finally, he outlines the challenges facing traders, particularly smaller businesses, and why expertise and flexibility will be critical in navigating these complex, evolving barriers to trade.
