Customsdigital -
t
he online magazine for digitization of the customs world

Our vision - revolutionize the customs world and make IT easy to understand for customs experts

Acting on our own initiative, with a passion for customs, and a fascination with digitization, we developed the Customsdigital project.

Perhaps you recognize the following situation, when you as a customs professional speak to an IT expert. Suddenly there are terms being used that might as well be another language. API, crawling, backbone, BinHex, IOT, just to mention a few. And then the thought: “It’s all Greek to me”.

In the same way, you regularly come across buzzwords, like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and “in future, everything will be automated”. You then go to the office and print out documents to type up the customs declaration, and realize that the dream is still far from reality.

Why Customsdigital?

“Thanks to a broad scope of application, what may sound complex at first is actually fascinating. As customs experts who are familiar with the UCC and regulations, Customsdigital aims to bring us a step closer to the issue of digitization, explaining it, and stimulating ideas for our own projects.”

To put it simply, we want to bring together two “nerds” who need each other. To this end, we look forward to many interesting suggestions, as well as people who are keen to support the project and share their knowledge.

Dear reader,

Welcome to the fourth edition of Customsdigital.

In this edition we deal with the topics of innovation, digital filing and the new system for customs clearance of small consignments.

What do the customs sector and our daily work have to do with innovation? We are not reinventing the law, at least not in our daily work. But if we take a closer look, we can find many innovations. Not all of them will revolutionise customs tomorrow, but they may make work easier. With our contribution ‘And now it’s time to innovate – yes, you can! Three tips on how you can learn to innovate’, we want to give you a few tips on how to promote and implement innovations in your company and in the customs department.

Customs documents must be archived in accordance with legal requirements, and also to enable the case to be examined by the authorities for traceability purposes. What we archive and how we to do that (paper vs digital) read in the article ‘Digital filing – how to keep your document management securely under control’.

ATLAS-IMPOST was launched in Germany on the customs side in mid-January. Now there is an end to transitional solutions or the transmission of a complete data set for small consignments. For companies, the electronic customs declaration is to be made via the specially created ATLAS-IMPOST system (import clearance of postal and courier consignments). Learn more on this in ‘Atlas Impost - off to the post office! How e-commerce and small consignments are handled now’.

I would also like to cordially invite you to pass on topic requests and ideas to us so that we continue to publish the right topics and articles for you in our development.

Best regards,
Janine Lampprecht

Instead of stacking file folders on shelves, more and more companies today are moving towards using systems for digital archiving. Today, people spend around two thirds of their working time processing documents. Creating, checking, sending, filing - all this costs them a lot of time and often also nerves. In the article, you will learn about the advantages of electronic archiving and what to look for when choosing digital archiving software.

Innovation is a process that renews and updates an area, a product or a service by applying new procedures, introducing new techniques or establishing successful ideas. But what does that actually mean in practice?
